I found your exercises to be meaty, usable cues for getting down to work. . . .

When I read out loud one of the final drafts and it started to come together, I was shaking I was so excited. And when I got the final sentence just right, I cried! This may be a marketing tool, but the satisfaction of having the words to go with my work has clarified and validated my vision.—Shayla Perrault Newcomb

I applied to a member gallery some months ago and was denied admission. At that time I submitted slides, resume, and my old artist statement.

A couple of months later I was part of a group show and one of their members saw my work and suggested that I apply. I advised her that I had and was rejected. She suggested I re-apply and I did.

I submitted the same slides, resume, biography and the new artist statement you helped me with. Well, I was accepted. I could only conclude that since the submission was the same and that the artist statement was the only thing that changed; it was the statement that impacted on my acceptance.

My first group exhibit with them is next month in NYC”s SOHO district.

I have to thank you again, Alyson, for your help with my statement. —

Get Help with Your Artist Statement

an e-book and artist statement consulting package from Alyson B. Stanfield and ArtBizCoach.com . . .

Your artist statement should compel people to quit reading and return immediately to your artwork. Does it?

Does the thought of writing about your art strike fear in your soul? Do you tremble at the thought of talking to someone about your art? Do you have a new body of work that you have yet to articulate? Or do you just want to be able to do these things better than you have in the past? Stop putting off your statement. Clear, meaningful language can help you connect with viewers and sell your work.

Artist StatementCover art by Gay Pogue.

Your statement is an opportunity to define yourself before someone else does it for you. It is a chance to assert, with facts and with clarity, the current direction of your work.

This is a 20-day journaling journey for writing your artist statement.

For:

  1. Artists who want to articulate a body of work.
  2. Artists who want to learn to journal about their artwork while making it.
  3. Artists who are preparing for an upcoming presentation or gallery talk about their work.
Listen to this audio recording about your statement (1.2 MB, MP3 file)

I want to help you talk, write, and think more clearly about your work so that you can make it meaningful to gallery dealers, curators, arts writers, and collectors
, as well as to people who may not know anything about art. Your statement is for a greater purpose than just words on a piece of paper. You will develop a method of putting your thoughts together in language you can use again and again throughout your career:

PRESS RELEASES . CONVERSATION . LABEL TEXT . GRANT APPLICATIONS .
WEB SITE TEXT . AND MUCH MORE

I thought that I would just be coming up with an artist statement but what I have found out by answering the questions you have assigned is that I now know so much more about what I really like about my paintings. I have had to actually write down my ideas and look at the words. This has brought so many things into focus that had just been meandering around in my thought. I have found more purpose and direction in my work. Thanks.—Artist, Littleton, CO
