Thanks for the great workshop at the photo gallery on Tuesday! You are so informed and so professional I had to believe most of what you shared with us. So I'm revising my statement, doing follow-up to the last conference I attended (today was the 2 week limit) and getting a financial support group going, updating my website, trying to get hold of the last person who helped with my mailing list, and wondering which of your workshops and sessions would apply to my career stage and experience. . . . Or maybe I should look for your workshop schedule and become your groupie, following you around!--Lynne Hull, eco-artist, CO

What People are Saying

FROM CLIENTS

The sincerity and care you show about art, artists and your work is very powerful.--Judith Barath, digital artist, IL

Working with Alyson was a great experience...together we created a focused cover letter for my grant application in a timely, efficient manner. Alyson was not only professional, supportive, and knowledgeable...she was also NICE!--Sheila Grabarsky, painter, NJ

You  believed in me before anybody else and that has made all the difference. Thanks, Alyson.--Mary Beth Haas, fiber artist, TN

I loved what you did to my statement. No one has been able to turn my writing into something beautiful. Thank you! --Wendy Mickle, ceramic artist, ME

FROM SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS

Alyson is awesome—bring her back to Iowa for more! Everything was well presented and interesting.--workshop participant, IA

I became aware of Alyson through her e-mail newsletter. The down-to-earth practical marketing advice that she offers artists is so professionally presented that I invited her to Idaho. She participated in two workshops where she advised and educated artists on how to market their work. Alyson brought to the sessions years of experience and a level of energy, professionalism, and commitment that inspired everyone who attended. I have ordered her online publications, which are equally as impressive. I would not hesitate to call on her again, she was magnificent.--Barbara Garrett, Artist Services Director, Idaho Commission on the Arts, ID

I couldn't have been more satisfied with the workshops. The experience was well worth six hours of drive-time. The workshops are exactly what I would have expected from my experience with Alyson's newsletter and her website: very well-organized, professional, packed with useful information, stimulating, thought-provoking and FUN!--Joan Chamberlain, Perennial Art, TX

Alyson is incredibly motivating and has provided me with the encouragement and tools that weren't taught us in college, and that will definitely aid me in my art business. I have gained direction, confidence and determination from this workshop. A must for any artist wanting to succeed!!--de Shan,  OK

I found all of the workshops equally helpful and constructive--there is something for everyone, the total novice to the professional! I received some very useful 'tweaking' of my business presentations!  Alyson took what I knew already and added the 'big picture' so that I understood better where to 'put' what I knew!  She helped knit together all of the information I had previously read and experienced on my own to date! The encouragement was uplifting--I really didn't realize how much I had 'gotten right' and I didn't realize how 'close' I was to having it right in other areas. Her help in clarifying 'the big picture' thus helped me better chart my career path more deliberately! I highly recommend her workshops for everyone - even if (or maybe especially if) you've been doing art professionally for a while! <smile>--Sue Clancy, OK

FROM STUDENTS IN ONLINE CLASSES

You did a nice job with this [marketing plan class] and I am grateful for the opportunity to use it to grow. I had an enlightening time working on it and I find in going over it that there are so many more opportunities out there than I had imagined. It's like being in a candy store.--Don Lee, painter, WA

I thought that I would just be coming up with an artist statement but what I have found out by answering the questions you have assigned is that I now know so much more about what I really like about my paintings. I have had to actually write down my ideas and look at the words. This has brought so many things into focus that had just been meandering around in my thought. I have found more purpose and direction in my work. Thanks.--Anonymous, painter, CO

The class definitely helped me with my marketing strategies. Even tho I had to finish the class late I thought the fast pace was okay and it made me concentrate and think things thru quickly. Reviewing my plan, I don't think I would change anything so I don't think haste made me set goals unwisely. You were very good in responding quickly. I think if I had had more time I might have procrastinated or "overthought" and the results would have been the same or maybe not as good.--Nancy Tankersley, MD

Actually, you have helped me to clarify so simply what I'm doing, that now it will be easier to create with a clear mind! Thank you soooo much. --Deborah Webster, painter, NY

I am keeping up with the course exercises and am surprised at how much I am learning about my art and what it means to me. I can't compliment you too much on the concept and format of the course. Well done.--Mary Beth Haas, fiber artist, OK

I wanted to tell you something which happened as a result of the first assignment. It directed us to write about why we create art, etc. I wrote seven pages non-stop. It was a great discovery for me and also  helped me to heal something I didn't even know was there. During the journaling I wrote about my first experiences of seeing my dad creating art. I also loved art and followed in his footsteps. I recalled a particular time in grade school when there was and art contest. I drew a picture of a lighthouse which my dad implied was not good enough. He eventually drew the picture for me and I turned it in as my art and won first prize. I was happy to win a trophy and didn't realize the impact until now. Subconsciously I felt my art was not good enough and that I had won unfairly and didn't deserve to win. I had internalized this and would downplay my art or not even enter contests after that. I always had thoughts that my art wasn't good enough.
The assignment helped to bring awareness and healing to me.
I also want people to know that the journaling assignments can be a valuable tool for clarity and healing.
--Nicole Mizoguchi, Japan

Your course is excellent so far. Well organized, thought provoking, insightful, and just like your newsletters, contains a lot of great info I have just not found anywhere else - and believe me, I've looked.--Christine "Keena" Friedrichsmeier Payne, Northern Ontario, Canada

FROM NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIBERS

I just wanted to send a note to say "Thank You!"  You are such a wealth of information! I have been receiving your weekly newsletters for a couple of years now, and they are invaluable to me, in motivation,  information and inspiration. If it had not been for Artbizcoach, I would likely still be puttering away with art as a merely a hobby, and not have hoped for a career in it. I wouldn't have had the nerve to enter a juried exhibition, wouldn't have had the gall to approach a gallery owner, and certainly would NOT have had the intestinal fortitude to apply to a national show (I was accepted to the 32nd annual national western show in Ellensberg, WA which is later this year). I'm still a long ways off from being a "career artist", but thanks to you, I am on my way.Julie Thompson, painter, Washington

I am writing to say how much I enjoy your weekly words which are always spot on. This week's thoughts about an artist commercial are very pertinent and I will think twice next time before I say "Um, I'm a fibre artist. I make sort of wall hanging things."--Clare Smith, um . . . fiber artist, Wellington, New Zealand

I would like to say how much I enjoy your newsletter. It is so informative and I have learned many things regarding my art and me.--Donna L. Taylor, WA

I absolutely love your newsletter.  You are insightful and wise.--Mary Hoffman

I'm enjoying your wonderful suggestions for artists. Thank you for being our inspiration and motivation. . . . Thank you for who you are and the great work you are doing. IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!--Shirley Nachtrieb, MO

Even though I'm told over and over I have the talent it takes to become very successful, I've been at a point in my life where I felt it would be so much easier to give up my art work because of the stress, which terrifies me because it is every part of my being. You have made me realize my inadequate feelings are due to not being prepared for success.--Tamara Schweigert, sculptor, ID
