Alyson's Weekly Steps for Taking Charge of Your Art Career
 Update

December 19, 2005

I hope you took the time to list your career accomplishments for 2005, as discussed in last week's newsletter: Art Marketing Action: Pat Yourself on the Back

This week, it's time to capture all of the good stuff for your marketing materials. It's time for updates.

Update your resume by adding your 2005 accomplishments. These will include exhibitions, awards, honors, articles written about you, articles you wrote, and any workshops or public speaking you led. Be sure to include the full, correct title, exact name of the venue, location, and date. I'm shocked at how incomplete some artists' resumes are!

Update your biography. Your biography is your resume in paragraph form and should include your major accomplishments. It is about your artwork and career, not about your personal life and hobbies (unless they are relevant to your artwork). If you need further clarification, these items are part of the Visual Artist's Kit:

Update the bio and/or resume on your Web site. It's awful to go to an artist's site and see that her career ended in 2001. (While you're there, make sure your name is prominent on every page and add a photo of yourself if you can.)

Update your inventory database. Which works sold? To whom? Do you have the collectors' full names, addresses, and did you send them a holiday greeting? Which were exhibited where (part of the piece's exhibition record)? Do you need to add new works? Did any go out to locations that haven't been noted? Read more about the information you should be tracking for each object's exhibition record on the Art Biz Blog

Getting organized and cleaning up these incompletes are great ways to end the year and look forward to an even more prosperous 2006.

KNOW THIS You have to do it sooner or later.
THINK ABOUT THIS Anything you put off for too long will begin to weigh you down and get in the way of your creativity.
DO THIS Make a file titled "resume" or "accomplishments" or whatever makes the most sense to you. Throughout the year, drop in slips of paper, exhibit announcements, and other items that will help you update your promotional pieces at a later date. Having everything in one place will make all the difference in the world--especially if you have to throw something together at the last minute for a presentation or mailing.

SETTING UP YOUR ART BUSINESS
: :
Begins Monday, January 2.
It's no accident I selected this class to start off the New Year. Class member Jennifer Mathews shares this about her experience: "The class is so much more than organization. It is really like having a career mentor. I have a half a dozen books on art marketing, art business etc., and I learned more with Alyson in 2 weeks! . . . I will definitely take other courses. I think there is great value in the amount of information she shares."
