Alyson's Weekly Steps for Taking Charge of Your Art Career
 Stand Firm

October 15, 2006

Are you wishy-washy on your pricing? Do you give in whenever someone asks you to lower your price or says they just can't afford your work? Did you turn to mush when the art center asked you to teach a class but said they could only pay you $100? Then this message is for you: stand firm! I don't mean semi-firm. I mean rock-hard firm.

Paula is coordinating the ArtBizCoach.com workshop in
Washington this week. Thanks, Paula!

We've been talking about this a lot in the "Promote Your Art with Confidence" class discussion. It's so easy to want to be accommodating. It's in our nature to want to be liked. Even more to the point, we sometimes lower our prices because we think it makes people more likely to buy from us. I'm going to tell you something that may not sound right to you, but it's true. Having a lower price than your competition doesn't help you and may even hurt you.

Lowering your price:
. Makes you appear less professional.
. Makes people wonder why they were that high in the first place.
. Is disrespectful to yourself and to those who have paid a higher fee.

You worked hard to get where you are. Lowering your price sets you back. It will also upset those who have already paid the higher price. (Word gets around quickly these days!) . Makes it difficult for you to ever be paid what you're worth. (Word gets around quickly these days!)

If your prices are well thought out in the first place, if you know why they're priced at a certain point and you can back that up, you should have immense confidence in your prices and fees.

Stand firm and I promise you will not only "not" lose sales, you will start attracting higher quality buyers and collectors along with better speaking and teaching opportunities.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

DO THIS! ACTION STEPS TO TAKE

--KNOW THIS
People who buy your artwork or your services rely on you to set your price fairly for everyone. They depend on you to be confident in that price and to know how and why it is what it is.

--THINK ABOUT THIS
Lowering your prices for anyone makes it harder to get back to where they were in the beginning.

-- DO THIS
Set your prices, memorize them, and stand firm. I've left a list of pricing areas on the Art Biz Blog. Please visit and share your insight: http://www.artbizblog.com.

Having problems with pricing? Pricing is part of your overall marketing plan. I help individual artists with their plans. See http://www.artbizcoach.com/consulting .
