 Check Your List Twice

December 4, 2006

It is, indeed, the most wonderful time of the year. Everyone seems a little jollier--except for those who are burdened with last-minute stuff and have more of an air of Scrooge than Santa. But for those who are in the spirit, I encourage you to take advantage of the season.

The holidays are a perfect excuse to get back in touch with those who have been helpful to you during the year. They’re an excellent reason to send cards with your artwork on them or small gifts that someone would treasure. Who is on your list? Check your list once. Check it twice. Who has been extra nice to you this year?

Think back on your exhibits and shows. Who helped you set up? Address postcards? Stick stamps? Get the word out?

Who purchased your work? Who told you about someone who wanted to buy your work? Who sold your work for you?

Who scheduled you to do a workshop or lecture? And who helped you set up when the time came?

Who wrote a nice column about your work for the paper or a magazine?

Who didn’t charge you for updating your website, teaching you how to use Photoshop, or reviewing your grant proposal?

Who have you forgotten?

Then there are the people who haven’t particularly been extra nice to you, but to whom you should be extra nice. You’d like to have a long and fruitful relationship with this group of people. These might be curators, art critics, art dealers, or heads of arts agencies. The card with your artwork on it will remind them of you and your work.

Keep track of everyone and what you send them (card, gift, etc.). Also, make note of what is sent to you and add anyone to your list that you might have forgotten.

ACTION STEPS TO TAKE

Know This...
It's the most wonderful time of the year.

Think About This...

Can you think of a better reason to send a card with your artwork on it than the most wonderful time of the year? You’re not doing it with a sales pitch. You’re doing it because you genuinely care about those on your list.

Do This...

Check your list once. Check it twice.

Are you too late for this year? I have some thoughts for saving the season AND for preparing for next year. Read them and leave your own ideas on the Art Biz Blog: http://www.artbizblog.com

Sell your art on eBay.

Last week’s newsletter “Share Personal Tragedy Cautiously” elicited an enormous response on the blog!

Stefanie Graves wrote:
“ . . . I think if a personal issue is a major factor in your life, and can be presented in a way that provides insight to your work, then it may be worthwhile to include it. But that's a personal choice.”

Diana Moses Botkin commented:
“ . . . When I saw your email this morning and the subject line I immediately thought of an artist who has chosen to write of her childhood abuse in her website bio. While I understand the post could be cathartic for her, it leaves me sad, and with a tainted viewpoint of her. Additionally, whenever I think of her, this is what first comes to mind rather than her art.”

I still have a few more spiral-bound copies of my e-book Cultivating Collectors left over from my recent workshops and I don’t like carrying an inventory. So, I’ll give out $5/off coupons to the first people who ask for and use them. (They’re normally $39.95 and priority mail shipping is on me!) Just reply to this email with “request $5 coupon” in the subject line. First come, first served.
